YouTube Shorts: Learn all about this Feature

Table of Contents

Short vertical content is here to change YouTube. Shorts are short videos, in vertical format, where effects play a very important role, sounds and transitions are crucial, and trends can make your video go viral.

YouTube launched Shorts in Spain in July 2021, but continues to announce new features for this function, with the aim of capturing the attention of creators of this type of content, on other platforms, so that they migrate to YouTube.

The metrics point to a very beneficial year for this new tool, since Shorts receive more than 30 billion daily views and Generation Z has increased its use by more than 100%. And, in addition, Shorts can now be monetized.

But, what is this monetization like? In order to generate income with your Shorts, you must be part of the YouTube Partner Program, whose requirements are to have more than 1,000 subscribers, have 4,000 hours of views in the last 12 months or 10 million views of Shorts in the last 90 days. And there will be two ways to make money through this new tool.

How to Make Money with Shorts on YouTube

On the one hand, through the new YouTube revenue sharing model, in which the profits from the ads viewed between the different Shorts will be grouped and then distributed among the creators based on their percentage of views. Creators will keep 45% of their income and will be paid based on the views their Shorts get.

On the other hand, YouTube is going to put the beta version of SuperThanks for Shorts, available to thousands of creators and throughout the year will implement it in all creators. It is a function that allows YouTube content creators to obtain income from other sources and interact with users who want to show them “gratitude” for their content. Viewers will be able to buy “SuperThanks” messages also in Shorts!

New Features in Shorts

And in case the monetization of Shorts seems little, YouTube announces other editing novelties for these short videos, which will make the tool very useful for creators:

  • Clips: this new function allows you to make clips of your long videos and convert them into Shorts, indicating at the bottom the authorship of the original video, allowing you to redirect to the long video of your channel.
  • Remix: with this new function you can also make remixes with the content of other creators. You have several options for use:
    • -Sound: you can select an audio fragment (maximum 15 seconds) from a video to use in your Short.
    • -Green Screen: you can choose a fragment (maximum 60 seconds) of a video to use as a background in your Short.
    • -Cut: you can use a segment (between 1 and 5 seconds) of a video as an introduction to your Short.

One thing is clear: YouTube is betting on this format for 2023 and wants us all to move to its shorter side: The Shorts.
